Basic Tips on Web Design

Winnipeg based Web Wizards Web Design and Navigation

When it comes to effective web design, website navigation is one of the most important aspects to consider. The goal is to have effective navigation to get your visitors to stay (not bounce) on your website by being able to find the information they want now without hunting.  Too many websites try to have cool navigation such as displaying the menu text as vertical spellings that are spelling bottom up in order to make reading the menu impossible.  If the end results of the website design and navigation scheme is an unusable but pretty design, you will simply lose business.

If you scan the menu or navigation bar and it is not clearly laid out people will leave instantly - simple as that.

Things to consider in web design navigation:

  • Organize your buttons/links in the order of importance
    • Check your Google analytics web page views to see what web pages should be first
    • Keep important links above the fold
    • Try to keep related links together
  • Position your links is the classical manner
    • People invariable look to the top of the page or the left hand side for web links
    • Avoid vertical type – it is just annoying
  • Maintain consistency so that users know where to look to find the links on each page
  • Make understandable links
    • Use a single word if possible
    • Use easily distinguishable fonts on contrasting backgrounds
  • Large numbers of links can be organized in a simple hierarchy
  • Use scripted menus to allow you to a have drill down menu design

Note if a web designer does decide to have hierarchical menus such as scripted drop down menus then they must be careful.  Make the menus and sub menus big enough so that the mouse can have a chance to stay on the choice.  Very narrow menus are difficult at best to have the mouse in precisely the correct spot.  Also, the reverse is true.  If the mouse has to move too much due to very large menus users often have problems tracking horizontally and can miss the sub menu and have to start over.

Web Wizards has the experience to provide a clean looking website that is easy to navigate and captures your customer’s interest.  Contact us and find out how we can make your website work for you,. or call 204-989-5664.
