The SEO Value of Links

Search engines grade your site on many factors and one very important element is the number of links you have pointing to your website.  Essentially the more links and the greater the quality of the links, the higher your website will rank. 

For example, Google uses a system they call PageRank, and it determines how important the page is to Google on a scale of 0 to 10.  Google considers each link as a vote of confidence on the quality of the information on your website and it popularity.  So when a popular page with a higher PageRank than your website links to your site in a relevant manner (the text that makes up the link to your page matches your pages content), it casts a vote of greater value than a website with an equal or lesser PageRank.

For example if CNN which is ranked a 10, were to link to one of your web pages it would boost that page’s PageRank much more than a link from a friends personal page ranked a 3.  Getting links from important pages will boost your websites ranking in the search engine results pages.

Links can also be reciprocal.  However these are valued less than a straight incoming link only, but when done between two sites that have related content it does help the PageRank and gains targeted traffic.

Link building takes time, but in the end it is needed to get a high ranking in the search engine results page.  There are many sources of links such as being linked from a blog, being linked from an online press release, or a social media marketing site such as Facebook and Twitter.
